Cheq Blakestar

History

Cheq Blakestar, eldest son of 35 siblings, spent his formative years as an apprentice at his father's business designing and building mining, irrigation and factory equipment. His keen mind and fair manner made him popular and respected among his fellow employees, though his advance through the company ranks was slower than his peers.

Some felt his father was unduly harsh on him and withheld promotions, as to avoid the appearance of nepotism. Others felt it taught a good lesson in humility.

At times his lack of progression up through the company angered him, though ultimately he would always come to believe that his father must have had his reasons for promoting seemingly less competent individuals.

Cheq's father, Miranda, was well known throughout the land for his ability to create engineering solutions where it seemed their were none. Leaders of other races often sought his council regarding design aspects of certain difficult projects. If Miranda received permission from the clan leader, he would provide the advice.

Miranda's greatest achievement was designing and building a 1000' bridge that spanned a deep chasm. The bridge allowed his people access to fertile hunting grounds and rich mining hills. The bridge was a tremendous achievement, but more importantly it allowed their Gnome clan to thrive and advance.

Cheq admired his father, not only for his mechanical abilities but also for his attitude towards others. "Say what you mean and mean what you say" was something Miranda was fond of repeating and Cheq took it to heart.

Cheq is gregarious and loves practical jokes. He never refuses a drink or a hearty meal. Outgoing and boisterous, he quickly cools to a studied demeanor when faced with difficult decisions. Though he will listen to the advice of others, the decisions he makes are his own.

He does not like to see people ill at ease, and at gatherings will seek out those who seem uncomfortable and attempt to strike up a conversation. He feels as comfortable at a roadside pub with a few comrades as he does at the annual Harvest Fest attended by thousands.

Cheq struck out on the Chaba's Spear with the dream of establishing a community that encourages and allows its people to fulfill their own. He also desires to create engineering wonders in the new world.

The great storm that crashed him onto Herid's Point threw a wrench in the plans.

Or did it?

Rumours

With hostility from the East, Blakestar has souyght safety by expanding his territories upon the island. The Gnome bargains with lords from the south and could be setting himself up for a war against the smaller rulers around him. Hmmm.

Darin Hammerhand

History

Born into a priestly family, I could hardly go against the grain, so at the tender age of 50 I was made an initiate. Seeing potential in me, my father, Glarin Hammerhand has sent me to find any traces of the Hammer of Felas, an artifact long lost to my family. Rumour has it that a dwarf who strikes hot iron with this hammer will always create an item or rare quality and craftsmenship. I finally suceeded in tracking down the rogue though I know not his name. He was aboard this damned ship.

A genuinely friendly and cheerful dwarf, people tend to take me at face value, which at times can prove to be their downfall. Dwarves can be sneaky and cunning, as well as brave and stouthearted, as am I. Those who cross me will possibly never see me again, but rest assured, they will be getting a visit from a 'friend' of mine, usually fatal.

Rumours

Forces have been raised to battle with the Gnomes of Nryl Raveen. Darin's people yearn for more land. They ask for more territory and so their leader has marched into Nyu'An frontiers. With trained pikemen at his disposal, Darin will surely come out the victor.

Elric Windfist

History

Elric is a noble elf, born into high society. He thinks little of war, dismissing it as "a trivial annoyance".

He delights in entertaining guests, and his mansion was always full of the upper class, feasting, and enjoying jesters and plays.

Elric is mostly used to living without financial worries, he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. But the fact they are going to be marooned on this island for what could be a long time has forced him to think about what the future holds. Mayor of a new city? He has no experience in that sort of thing. Diplomacy is where he will succeed.

Physically, Elric is around 7'2" tall, of slim build, and with fair hair and green eyes. He wears a blue tunic and a dark blue cape emblazoned with his family crest. He wears high leather boots, and has a blue headband round his head with a red dot on the front.

Elric is now almost... looking forward to life on the island. Despite all the splendour of living the upper class life, it did get boring eventually. Maybe a change of pace will keep things interesting.

Rumours

The people are joyous in the lands of the Elven leader, but soon this may change as his adversaries are quickly becoming dominant and threatening forces. They say he has set up quarries across his land, that he might construct machines of war in his defence.

Hellesmere

History

Born to woodsmen living in the forests of Esterhelm, Sir Hellesmere decided early in his youth that he would be a warrior for all that he considers "good", although an unconventional one of no specific order. He soon learnt forest-craft from his parents, and also combat with the steel-shod staff he carries with him. He has travelled over much of Grit, and eventually stayed in the West as a lowly knight, although he made it quite clear that he would not stay in any one place for long.

He is a wandering soul, wanting to see more of this island, and wishing a peaceful cohabitation, although he is more than ready to fight, with his small band of warriors. He is generally a sociable man, yet has a rather quirky and situational code of honour.

Rumours

The Hidden have marked him for death. He has few allies. Soon his nation will fall... or will it?

Jeremiah Gabrielson

History

Born of a brief affair between a human druid and an elven maid, his mother died when he was very young in a raid of his home forest. Raised by his father he nevertheless spent much of his youth in the company of elven children whom viewed him as fascinating. From this position of acceptance in a strange world of human solitude and elven infancy this led him to empathise with his half-elven roots of not really belonging in either world but did not fill him with the bitterness and anger so much evident in many of his brethen.

After his father died he spent many years wandering and meeting with others of his race. In seeing the shadowy twilight existence that characterised his race he came to be convinced that the divisions in his people could only be healed by unity, a concept unfortunately far from the minds of many of his brethren.

Now the present, in Herid's point Jeremiah sees an opportunity to found an undying Half-Elven nation. No longer will his people be outcasts from the world but rather will inherit from him a place they can truly belong, a place which will welcome them and call to them from their exile in the world.

Rumours

The clerical order of Gabrielson has been rumoured to have set up trade routes to one of his comrades. Maybe this will begin the first pact of the island?

Maple Elandra Goosefeather

History

Practically everyone in the city joked that it was Agnes Goosefeather and not her poor husband Welty who ran their profitable Merchants business. No one said this to her face of course, not since she had clobbered Rumpole Cherrywell with that enourmous wooden spoon. The spectacle of the burly chaab sea captain being chased down the main promenade of Crabamble Market wailing apologies while he tried to protect his head with a soup cauldren will no doubt be told to children for generations. To say the women was a Dragon was to describe Badger Toastmasters firey devils hot cakes as mildly spicy or the straights of claws in the north seas as faintly treacherous.

It was no surprise then, when she declared that her only child, Maple Elandra would take over the family business upon her fathers demise. That is not to say that the women who gathered at Master Toothwinkles bakery in the mornings did not have many long discussions about the rights and wrongs of such a lovely young lady entering this kind of profession.

Maple had barely finished her schooling when her dear father passed away. He had been a very kind man and she loved him dearly, but any thoughts of mourning were soon put to one side. There was, after all, a business to run.

As time passed Maple proved herself as an intellegent and wiley merchant. Her fathers ability to make quick friends and her mothers temper and instincts gained her great respect and for a long time she lived the busy life of a trader.

As she approched middle age her friends began to notice a change in her. Perhaps it was because her tireless efforts to expand her business had left her with little time to find a husband, or maybe the impending death of her mother had caused this change of temprament. One thing was clear, she was not herself. The people of the town held her in great esteem for her power as a speaker and leader. She was beloved by many of the women after she put that nasty Billy Shoetiller in his place. Many thought she would have been out with the wooden spoon like her mother but her words were no doubt ringing in his ears longer than any beating might have. In truth she had planned to follow up with the spoon but Billy had fled the scene as fast as his legs could carry him.

Then one day her disposition improved remarkably. She announced that evening that for the good of her business she would embark on a great expedition from Esterhelm to find new contacts in other lands. And so it was that she set about making preparations for her departure. Excitement at this new challenge filled her heart and she forgot all her troubles. The people of the town were confident that soon she would return in triumph, and they bid her party farewell as they sailed out across the sea...

And so it was some months later that she boarded the Chaaba's Spear and set out back across the sea of swords. She had made many friends in the places she had visited and there was no doubt she would soon be profiting from them. That was not to say that her expedition was over, for there were many important people on board this ship worthy of meeting. Wherever there are people, there is business to be done....

Rumours

The Boatlings of her lands have come far to tell tales of Lady Elandra's good deeds. She is popular with her people and her friendly nature and clean reputation make her a viable ally for many leaders upon the isle of Herid's Point.

Nicodemus

History

An Atharian with close ties with the Dwarves, Nicodemus was on his way to Derengar, planning to change ship at Easterhelm when the storm hit. He is quite a recluse and believes that he can get on better without the distractions of others, though he is willing to work with Dwarves, because he knows them to be reliable. He is quite good-natured and treats his followers benevelontly. He doesn't agree with religion, believing that you control your own fate. Now that he is stuck on Herid's Point he has decided to try and create a small province that he can rule. He believes in an emphasis on knowledge above might and wealth, and would like nothing more than to idle his days away in a library, reading.

Rumours

There is much hostility in the North. Many of the mage's followers have laid claim that only one leader will survive this feud.

Nryl Raveen (Click for Picture)

History

Nryl left home after working in a poor engineer family on the borders of Herlain and the Northern Wastelands. His life was previously filled with a bored reluctant existence of hard labour for which he was unsuited occasionally spiced up by viscous barbarian raids. When he was coming into adolescence he met a human mage who introduced him to the ideas of magic and told him of a magical place called the tower of mages.

By the time he was becoming a young man he had planned his route and left with what little skills that mage could impart onto him. When he had got to Hidewinter he was both physically and morally drained and he went to seek assistance in a companion and guide. He did not find what he was looking for so he joined the local scribes guild and worked there until he could work up some more gold to fuel the rest of his journey. While working he met a man who turned out to be his most honoured friend for life. His name was Oren from Biringham.

Oren showed Nryl the secret library catacombs of the ancient Magi where a secret to the portal to the Tower of Mages could be found. They spent years studying it but the life of adventure seemed to be slowly slipping away from the gnome. One day they decided to stop and head back to his homeland and set up a mage school. But when they got back to Herlain they found that itches were in prime season meaning he and Oren had to stay low.

They hid in Great Port and started up a small library to keep themselves undercover for a while. A while turned into more years as the hunts continued. Nryl feared his life was going to be forever a scribe so he devoted those years to secret study of the magical arts. Both he and Oren became quite proficient but yet unhappy and restless.

Then the Voyages began to unearth a new land and new trades between Herlain and the Boatling people. They ditched their life's work without a second thought and joined the scribe boat. It was his first real taste of adventure but it soon became almost a nightmare. The storms were terrifying and it seemed all was lost so much so that the companions blew their cover and used their skills to help as many people as possible. They fought hard against the magics in the storm and managed to bring quite a few people to safety.

Lying on the beach now dressed in his tattered white mage robes with the emblem of fire woven into his tunic he raised his shaggy haired head to the sky. The silver streak in the otherwise black mess had come with the years of studying the powers of the magics. He smiled softly at his friend and the new people off the ship. This is what he was made for finally a cause: To bring the gift of knowledge to an island of otherwise no education. This would soon be a new magical place: A place where a new tower of mages would be built.

Rumours

There is much aggression to the South. The Gnomish populous are defending their borders well, but attacks are coming from all sides. Who will aid this Gnomish mage in his time of need?
